To research his latest role, Hollywood star Johnny Depp stepped not into his character's shoes but his trousers.
Depp was able to pull on the pair last worn by John Dillinger, a man once so feared he was named America's Public Enemy No.1.
Depp said he felt privileged to be allowed to wear the cotton trousers the bank robber was wearing when gunned down by FBI agents outside a Chicago cinema.
Not only did they help in his characterisation but they were a perfect fit. Depp said "It was amazing, we're the same size."
He grabbed the opportunity on a private visit to a museum dedicated to the gangster in Hammond, Indiana.
Depp and Batman star Christian Bale, who plays FBI agent Melvin Purvis in Public Enemies were filming nearby. Director Michael Mann shot the £50million film, due in Britain this summer, at locations and hotels where Dillinger once lived and stayed.
Depp said the memorabilia helped him to play Dillinger. As well as the trousers, he was able to hold the gangster's lucky rabbit's foot, an old rifle and baseball shoes.
Curator Erika Scheering said the star "got quite a kick" out of the visit.
Depp, 45, told a US magazine: "It was a real insight. Dillinger was one of those guys, like Charlie Chaplin and Evel Knievel, I was fascinated with at a young age."

I'm assuming he just got to try these on, not actually wear them during filming? I'm sure the museum people wouldn't have liked that much. LOL Very cool that he got to do that. I would imagine it helps to 'feel' like the character. I am soooo excited about this movie. Trying to be patient............
